There's a certain proportion of artists I cannot stand. It's not
influenced by malice, but caused by wimpy wannabees. When I saw Veronica Falls
live in New York City, (yeah... Deal with your jealousy!) It caught me by
surprised at how primitive they actually sound. The indie pop four piece are a
flashing beam of light for the depressed and lonely adolescents of
hipsterville. Where Pabst Blue Ribbon is the drink of choice and fashion is
your personality. I clearly despise Veronica Falls... Not the members, they
actually have spectacular taste in music, I just can't stand their sound.
Veronica Falls echo The Vaselines indie pop aesthetic, however they fail to
match the passion and excitement The Vaselines still transmit.
"Teenage" is the pre-release single off Veronica Falls' sophomore
album Waiting For Something To Happen, and I can't quite work out why.
It starts off in typical Veronica Falls fashion... With that repetitious
three-chord progression they for some reason take to heart. Teenage is an
indication that instead of being different and furthering their capabilities,
they've stumbled at the first hurdle. Now there's nothing wrong with the lyrics
as such, or the melody, harmony, whatever... It's just all been done before. On
that, I quote the The Boy Bands Have Won: "The only thing
that you can do to music that will damage it is not change it, not make it your
own, because then it dies."
