It's currently 22:45, February 2, 2013, and My Bloody Valentine has posted
this on their Facebook: "We are preparing to go live with the new
album/website this evening. We will make an announcement as soon as it’s
up." I'm writing this in a state of confusion, panic,
excitement... I don't know how I feel, I only know one thing: My Bloody
Valentine's third album is finally in our grasp.
My love for My Bloody Valentine goes back years, back when I was nothing
more than a jolly anonymous poster in my first visits to /mu/. This essential
list featured Loveless, so I listened and my god, my listening habits, my
youth, my life changed. Loveless is older than I am, incredible when you think
about it. It's been 21 years since an album has been released by the Irish
quartet. We've waited years, months and days, depending on when we discovered
this unique and influential rock band.
I, like the many shoegaze fanatics out there will wait eagerly for My Bloody
Valentine to update their website and have their third album available. We
don't know what this album will be called, hell; we don't even know what the track
listing is or how many tracks it may be. This is totally out of the blue, which
brings me to the album cover. It's blue, it's hazy and it's very 90s, not at
all what I expected. The lettering of 'mbv' certainly looks atrocious, but they
can be forgiven.
Take a deep breath Eddie... Calm down, it won't be long before you can
listen. This night has to go down in history as the most hyped few hours in any
albums history. I think back to 2010, when Plastic Beach by Gorillaz caused
such a stir on the internet, leading everyone to jump after pre-release single
"Superfast Jellyfish" only to be disappointed with what is of course just hype
and excitement. My Bloody Valentine are a quality band with a lot of history.
They created the most ground-breaking and influential album of the 90s, so it
will be interesting to hear what they come up with.
Hype can be something of a killer when it comes to actually listening /
doing something. So we will see whether or not the masses of fans and music
listeners alike will fondly accept the new My Bloody Valentine album, or
disregard it. Loveless has the tendency to confuse first time listeners; I just
wonder what my first impressions will be. No matter what happens in the next
few hours, I'm counting on Kevin Shields to deliver this time. He's already
promised this album in 2012, he promised it would be ready three nights ago...
So here we are, 23:05, February 2, 2013, awaiting the third My Bloody Valentine
album.
