Track Review: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Sacrilege

Yeah Yeah Yeahs will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut album in April, the date Fever To Tell was released in 2003. There has been a three year gap between every Yeah Yeah Yeahs album, with Show Your Bones in 2006 and the synth pop direction third album It's Blitz in 2009. People were expecting the fourth Yeah Yeah Yeahs album last year, however Mosquito finds itself four years post-It's Blitz, and it's hard to tell where the time has gone. Karen O has since collaborated with Santigold, Swans and David Lynch, while contributing to the soundtracks of Where the Wild Things Are and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She contributed heavily to The Flaming Lips psych double-album Embryonic in 2009, which is where Yeah Yeah Yeahs' direction takes a turn towards the phone-call distortion of Karen O's voice.

"Sacrilege" takes the percussion heavy psychadelia of The Flaming Lips and put's it together with Spiritualized esc structure and gospel themes. Karen O has a highly effected vocal which she delivers in her usual kooky and imaginative style. She has personality and Yeah Yeah Yeahs are built on this. It's nothing like It's Blitz, or the other two albums for that matter. It's not experimental as such, though Karen O has stated their intention to experiment with Mosquito, and I’m sure the end project will be along the lines of a female version of a three piece The Flaming Lips. This is a great introduction to Mosquito and the upcoming Yeah Yeah Yeahs album shouldn’t be taken lightly, for this could possibly be an early contender for album of the year, that's if "Sacrilege" is anything to go by.
