Trailer Trash Tracys - Ester

With modern shoegaze becoming a non-existent genre, It's a breath of fresh air to read that a London based quartet known as 'Trailer Trash Tracys', are beginning to gain support and moderate success with the release of their Domino Records debut, 'Ester'. With an experimental edge and cohesive style of self recording, the band began to fill support slots. Labelled between noise pop and shoegaze, Trailer Trash Tracys combine layered aesthetics with minimal guitar riffs and delayed vocals.

The opener, 'Rolling Kiss The Universe', begins with an unusual percussive introduction, mixed with synthesized soundscapes and delirious vocal harmonies which echo on either side of the speaker. It sounds like something The Flaming Lips would conceive through improvisation. We're left to acknowledged the bands existence in current music. The sound is incredibly free form, yet textured to perfection.

As the opener draws to a close with swooshing synthesizers, the second track 'You Wish You Were Red' embarks. With it's notable simplistic electronic drum beat and well constructed guitar riff, the sound is  initially minimal. The vocals again feature a heavy use of delay, only adding to the concise sound. The ear catching guitar riff stands strong as the following layers magnify the shoegaze outlook. This track was an instant favourite, the compact drum beat matched well with the ever present guitar riff and tear jerking vocals.

The honourably seductive and achingly alluring vocals prove strong with the 50's/60's pop influenced 'Dies In 55'. With it's Soulful bass line and recurring keyboard arpeggio, the hauntingly hazy vocals and passionate lyrics create a sonic world of art. I admire the synthesized soundscapes and aggressive percussion, it shows both delicate and angered song structure. The ingredients of Dream Pop are present throughout this record, with eerie vocals and simplistic beats as with the other wordly 'Engelhardt's Arizona'. This track reveals the deeper sonic textures and spiralling guitar work I hold so dearly with my Dream Pop.

The aforementioned guitar sound on track two, is again witnessed on 'Los Angered'. This clean, yet reverberated sound is alike fellow Domino Records artist Anna Calvi. The Dream Pop layers and supporting vocals give the song that extra feeling of noise. This feeling of noise is heard time and time again on Ester. The industrial sounding 'Starlatine' blends sparse drumming with 80's esque synthesizer riffs. The outcome is three minutes of pure nostalgia.

If we take a look back to 2009, Trailer Trash Tracys released the single 'Candy Girl'. This was before they accomplished the supporting artist slot on The XX tour. The song was a heavy, lo-fi recording with gritty guitar work and eerie drumming. For this album, the band re-recorded the song and gave it a compact, modern sound. The song has lost it's low fidelity status, but keeps it's original structure and reverberated drums. Carefully constructed layers add to the noise as the song progresses, with the final 30 seconds featuring several guitars and bass work. It's one of the notable high points in terms of musical creativity on the album. With it's delicious guitar riffs and delayed vocals, you can hear soft melancholy effects which only draw the listener to replay the track over and over.

It's almost certain Trailer Trash Tracys are out to impress this time around. The energetic 'Strangling Good Guys', sounds like a mash between My Bloody Valentine and The Big Pink. It's an astonishingly beautiful sound with the heartfelt vocals and heavy drum beat. 'Black Circle' is no different. It has funky bass and left sided percussion, leaving the listener with a three minute jam of noise.

Thirty minutes beyond the precedent free form opening, we settle with the summoning closer, 'Turkish Heights'. The industrial beat and synthetic guitar work only aids the compact sound. This has been a huge acclamation (by myself) regarding this album. I love the harmonic vocals, the layers, the simplistic left sided percussion and the funky bass work. It's an admirable end to one of the best albums of the year.

I must have listened to this album way over twenty times. I'm glad I took the extra time that was needed for a detailed review. Without shouting 'AOTY 2012' or something along those lines.. This album takes 80's Cocteau Twins and The Jesus & Mary Chain, combines it with The XX and Anna Calvi, generating an album of noise, dream pop, shoegaze, indie rock and pop. We hear delayed vocals used to the bands advantage, deep electronic drum beats reminiscent of the Darkland's era The Jesus & Mary Chain. Trailer Trash Tracys put the gaze in stargaze.
