List: Top 10 Albums of 2010

We have a top notch group of albums here from 2010, personally selected by Music Review Database as our view of the best albums of 2010. It's always a nightmare picking ten albums out of many many hundred, so we have five leftovers.. The five that didn't make it, but are still very very good top 15 albums, enjoy.

Women - Public Strain
No Age - Everything In Between
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
The National - High Velvet
Foals - Total Life Forever
Belle & Sebastian - Write About Love

10. Four Tet - There Is Love In You

Kieran Hebden released his fifth studio album in January 2010 to an outstanding amount of praise. I didn't pick up on it till later in 2010 during July/August time. It was the perfect sunset driving album and got me from A to B in ease throughout the later part of 2010 to present day. It's beautiful textures relied on loops and synthesizer hooks which were sensational. His IDM recordings mixed with ambient made great late night listening material which was both relaxing and energetic at the same time. It takes a decent electronic artist to get me interested, but it takes a special artist like Four Tet to keep me listening and coming back for more. This is the album to pull in listeners.

9. LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening

LCD Soundsystem is dead.. James Murphy pulled the plug just over one year ago, and what a career He's had under the moniker. Their music can be described as dance-punk with that electronic and alternative edge. This third and final album saw Murphy take a deeper look on his compositions. The dark and bleak atmospheres of Iggy Pop's The Idiot can be heard, as with the defining Berlin Trilogy album, Low by David Bowie. Comparisons aside, LCD Soundsystem bolster a range of musical genres which take electronic music to the next level with the help of post-punk influences and musical skill. This is just an album you have to give a listen, agreeably the best in the trio and by far the most experimental and realistic album.

8. Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma

It's full of harps and guest musicians ranging from Thom Yorke to his cousin Ravi Coltrane, Cosmogramma delivers what we've all been wanting. Another Flying Lotus album, but this time it has 5x the amount of energy and glitch than before. You won't be able to find another album more jazzy and funk filled than this. It truly is a wonderful album recorded and produced by one of the biggest names in the electronic world right now.  The soundscapes are desirable, as are the deep bass beats that create a vivid Kid A-esque atmosphere, truly enjoyable music.

7.  Caribou - Swim

Topping the electronic albums of 2010 is the Canadian wizard behind some of the best electronic music of the 2000's, Daniel Smith, or Caribou, his moniker after Manitoba. Swim couldn't be more prolific than it is. The whizzing percussion loops sat pertly above his light delayed vocal. Every little aspect of this album has been hand placed and matched to sound amazing both at home and in the live venue. The drumming is outrageously good and he uses a great deal of soundscapes to create a well hung sound of electronic and deep house. Swim was an outstanding album with several standout tracks, and for that reason it makes the top 10, no questions asked.

6. Janelle Monáe - The Arch Android

Janelle Monáe has that blend of R&B, funk, jazz, pop and soul in her music. The Arch Android was her step into debut album material with help from an array of studio musicians and guests from Kevin Barnes to Saul Williams. what grabbed me was her energetic style of music mixed with the ancient vibe of her lyrical theme. The concept is magnificent and I hope Monáe manages to take a step back and simplifies her music in order to take that huge step forward. This album is filled with pop tracks with many different structures taking place.

5.  Warpaint - The Fool

I'm rooting for Warpaint to take over the world one day. When they released their EP 'Exquisite Corpse' in 2009, something quite strange happened to me. I became addicted to their sound. It's not something that happens often, but once in a while a band comes along with a 'sound' that just changes everything, and I think Warpaint will eventually be one of those bands. The Fool is one excessively heavy albums with many grunge features and psychedelic drones. it's really a pleasure to hear four females play what they want and compose their material from scratch. This album is essentially art rock for the drowsy listeners, it's enough to make you doze off, in a good way.

4. Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me

I'm still yet to review Have One On Me, but I'll get round to it eventually. The truth is simple, it's incredibly hard to review perfection like this. Joanna Newsom has three discs of pure singer-songwriter material with the most beautiful compositions in modern music. Her vocal skills are excellent and, hit or miss, she's one fantastic artist. Have One On Me is just filled with these long compositions of stories that don't seem to drag on. it also has '81', the magnetic anthem of pure elegance and sophistication.

3. Anaïs Mitchell - Hadestown

Creeping in at number three is yet another Canadian artist. Anaïs Mitchell seems to have it all set for a long career of folk recordings (with the guidance of Ani DiFranco). Hadestown is one intelligent piece of art, with several guests who deliver acting, within their vocals. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver lends his voice to play a major role within the concept as Mitchell completes the eclectic line up with vocal skill much alike Joanna Newsom. This album is special because of the concept and the way the album flows, it's the essential 2010 concept album.

2. Beach House - Teen Dream

It's always difficult separating the top two, somehow I managed it without tearing out my ears. Beach House have released to date, three spectacular albums with one on the way. Teen Dream is dream pop with an extra slice of dream. They are extremely skillful musicians and know how to compose without going to far. This album is complex, but features vague recordings. You can tear apart the soaring reverberated guitar and achingly beautiful keyboards to be left with a very basic electric drum beat. I rate this album very album because of it's passion and tranquillity. Beach House excelled themselves and every fan when they released Teen Dream. They were only kept off the top because of how outstanding the next album is.

1. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest

Halcyon Digest, Halcyon Digest, Halcyon Digest... Halcyon Digest. My my. This album is number one because it's quite simply the best album of 2010 in every category. Deerhunter have several simplistic tracks and they don't over complicate their compositions, but it's the way they go about with their dynamics. It's intelligent and it's pleasing to hear this music because it's not often a band hatch out of their shell twice in a row (Microcastle, 2006). This album has 11 track of wonderful material ranging from the heavy and dreamy 'Desire Lines' to the severe tempestuous final track 'He Would Have Laughed'. It doesn't just have single material and heavier material such as the aforementioned tracks, it also has three melancholy tracks in 'Earthquake, Sailing and the single Helicopter'. It's the broad range of material that captures my emotions when listening to this album. It's on repeat at least once a week and for good reason, this is a keeper.
