Hey Jane is our first look at Spiritualized revamped sound since 2008's Songs In A&E. I know for a fact that Spiritualized have taken a louder, popy approach to their seventh studio album Sweet Heart Sweet Light. Hey Jane will be the first single to be released from the album and I'm already very excited. I saw Spiritualized play this track live in 2011 and it was very powerful with tremendous structure when performed live with the gospel choir. One of the things to note is the guitar riff which is reversed, split open and regurgitated for the second half of the track. The first side is very melodic with a hip feel and a two chord progression feel much like Spacemen 3's material. The bass stands out as does the support vocals that set up the melody.
The second half is a build up for the enigmatic closing. Watching the video makes my skin crawl with confusion as the protagonist enters the motel room for the second part of the track where the guitars screech the melody and the two chord rhythm repeats itself with much more energy than before. Jason Pierce delivers a fantastic vocal of "Sweet heart, sweet light," which just sounds fantastic and above every Spiritualized track since 1997's Cop Shoot Cop. The listener is in for a treat with Sweet Heart Sweet Light. I for one, cannot wait.
